Minooka - I-80 North Utility Extensions

The project extended utilities and infrastructure around a major highway, addressing limitations in service and supporting future development opportunities.

The project scope included installation of approximately 8,400’ of 20”-27” diameter sanitary sewer and 5,900’ of 12”-16” diameter water main, along with lift station abandonment and utility service extension to a Village park. Additional work included installation of a grinder pump station, approximately 400’ of 6” sanitary sewer and 780’ of 1.25” force main, approximately 1,100’ of 8” water main and 560’ of 1.5”-2” HDPE water service, and approximately 830’ of augers ranging from 20”-48” diameter crossing I-80 and Ridge Road, as well as rock excavation.

The project was locally funded via impact fees, with costs spread over the service area to improve development opportunities and allow developers to share cost and workload, and it provides a secondary (redundant) loop for a 16” water main from one of the Village’s primary deep wells and treatment facilities north of I-80. These efforts resulted in water main and sanitary sewer extensions enabling development for more than 2,000 acres within the Village’s FPA north of I-80, previously limited due to absence of or insufficient utility service, abandonment of an aging lift station, and addressing ongoing developer concerns with design requiring I-80 crossing within bedrock as well as utility installation at the rock/soil interface.
