Midlothian - Manhole Inspections

The project goal is to reduce inflow and infiltration (I/I) of storm water into the sanitary sewer system as part of the Village's compliance with the Long-Term Program Operation and Maintenance Plan (LTOMP) portion of the Infiltration and Inflow Control Program (IICP) to comply with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD).

The project scope included Level 1 manhole inspections of the entire system, excluding manholes inspected in 2018, totaling 758 manholes, along with manhole GPS updates, pipe diameter updates, and updates to the Village's overall sanitary sewer atlas. These efforts resulted in identifying manhole locations and updating the sanitary sewer atlas, informing the Village of needed maintenance, and helping to prevent sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) and basement backups (BBs). Additional outcomes included the ability to view defects in real time through an ArcGIS online dashboard viewer, review photos on the dashboard, identify excess infiltration and inflow into sanitary manhole structures, report deteriorating manhole structures, provide recommendations for repairs, and develop cost analysis and breakdowns of required improvements.
