South Holland - Flow Monitoring

The project included identification of dry weather and wet weather flow conditions and ranking the relative severity of observed rainfall dependent infiltration and inflow (RDII). A total of 31 temporary flow monitors and 5 temporary rain gauges were installed to evaluate system performance and collect data for analysis.

The results included identification of peaking flow factors and the ability to determine hot spot sewer basins that contribute the most I&I into the sanitary sewer system, along with development of a roadmap for the Village to follow the next Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey (SSES) steps to narrow down I&I. Additional outcomes included implementation of smoke testing, manhole inspections, and closed-circuit televising (CCTV), as well as the ability to view where surcharging frequently occurs, establish operational capacity, determine if sewer basins are self-cleansing, and identify areas that need to be placed on a maintenance jetting list.
