Hickory Hills - 87th Street Lift Station Improvements
The City’s 87th Street lift station was at the end of its useful life and needed to be upgraded. The existing equipment was original to the station construction, with a single pump in operation, and was over 50 years old. The project included demolition and disposal of existing lift station equipment, with the contractor required to maintain service with bypass pumping while the station was offline, along with removal of a 15-foot deep dry pit and the addition of a new 5-foot deep valve vault by adding a minor amount of additional force main.
The work also included installation of wet well and valve vault lids with integrated aluminum access hatches, new pumps, pump controls, piping, above grade control cabinet, and electrical wiring and gear, as well as extensive permitting with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, and Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways. The result is a new valve vault that provides the City with easy access to valves and piping, new pump guide rails that provide easy removal of pumps and no longer require confined space entry, and upgraded control equipment and pumps that will provide a long service life to the City.
