The City of Calumet City begins its long-term water capital improvement plan with the construction of a new water pumping station to significantly increase water capacity; City officials host a ground breaking ceremony.

Calumet City, IL (August 28, 2008): The City of Calumet City is pleased to begin work, in conjunction with Robison Engineering, Ltd., Metropolitan Pump, and Gaskill & Walton, on a new water pumping station, which will increase the City’s water capacity by nearly 20%. This marks the beginning of the City’s long-term capital improvement plan. City officials host a ground breaking at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday August 28, 2008 at the Calumet City water department parking lot.

New Water Pump Station

The new water pump station will be relocated along Stewart Avenue just west of Greenbay Avenue, utilizing as much of the existing infrastructure as possible. The existing station will be retired once the new station, which will have a capacity of 13.8 million of gallons per day, is operational. The construction of the new station will allow for the correction of operating levels in the ground storage reservoirs, increasing the storage capacity. The additional storage will increase fire fighting capacity and greater storage volume for the City to draw from during peak use periods and extended seasonal droughts.

The project calls for the complete construction of a new building with all of the related amenities and includes the installation of four vertical split case pumps and motors, variable frequency drives, vacuum prime system, pressure relief valve, flow meters, motor control center, instrumentation, chlorination equipment, standby power generator, security upgrades, and landscaping.

The anticipated project cost is $2,734,500. The construction of the pump station will be phased so that the City will not lose any storage capacity during construction.  The new pump station can easily and cost effectively be expanded if the need for more water capacity arises. This project will increase the capacity and reliability of the equipments’ useful life of 75 to 100 years.

City of Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush states, “A new water pumping station is essential for delivering water to our residences and commercial properties.  This administration created a long-term capital improvement plan to make the project possible.”

The project team includes Calumet City Water & Sewer Superintendent Marvin Skarwecki; and construction contractor Gaskill & Walton Construction Co. and Metropolitan Industries, Inc., suppliers of pumps and SCADA system. Contributing from Robinson Engineering, Ltd. are City Engineer Ron Wiedeman, Project Manager Tom Nagle, Project Engineer Greg Kamplain, and Resident Engineer Mike Nemitz.

Russ W. Prekwas, Chairman and CEO of Robinson Engineering, reflects, “It gives us great pleasure to assist communities in realizing their goals. This is an exciting addition and tremendous effort by the City to enhance its infrastructure.”

Located 30 miles southeast of Chicago, Calumet City is a modest and diverse city with great community pride. Nearly 40,000 residents enjoy the City’s affordable housing, quality educational system, and abundance of recreational opportunities.
