The City of Calumet City, along with Robinson Engineering, Ltd. (REL) will unveil the City’s new standby generators. City officials host a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration.
Calumet City, IL (August 28, 2008): The City of Calumet City is excited to unveil its new generators during a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 28, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the storm water pump station at State Street just east of Burnham Avenue.
For this project, the City is replacing 22 year old generators, installing a number of new components and upgrades, and relocating and upgrading existing controls. The new generators are now located on the exterior of the building, eliminating exposure to the harsh environment inside the sewer and storm water pumping station, greatly increasing their useful life and diminishing the risk of equipment failure during a peak storm event. The station is fully automated and does not require personnel onsite to operate the generators during a power outage.
The total project cost was $771,000 with $450,000 for the purchase of the new generators and $321,000 for the installation. The project was completed under the bid price by $2,800. It is estimated that the City saved an additional $45,000 by choosing to purchase the generators directly from the supplier.
City of Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush states, “The new generators ensure that Calumet City residents will continue to receive quality storm water removal for decades to come.”
The project team included Calumet City Water & Sewer Superintendent Marvin Skarwecki, construction general contractor Gaskill & Walton Construction Co., and generator supplier Metropolitan Industries, Inc. Contributing from Robinson Engineering, Ltd. are City Engineer Ron Wiedeman, Project Manager Tom Nagle, Project Engineer Greg Kamplain, and Resident Engineer Mike Nemitz.
Russ W. Prekwas, Chairman and CEO of Robinson Engineering, reflects, “It gives us great pleasure to assist communities in realizing their goals. This is an exciting first step in tremendous planning and effort by the City of Calumet City to enhance its current infrastructure.”
Located 30 miles southeast of Chicago, Calumet City is a modest and diverse city with great community pride. Nearly 40,000 residents enjoy the City’s affordable housing, quality educational system, and abundance of recreational opportunities.
